Carib-HYCOS

The objective of the Carib-HYCOS project was to reduce the loss of human life and material damage caused by natural disasters, through the introduction of modern flood forecasting and warning systems, thus enhancing natural disaster mitigation capabilities. Furthermore, the project aimed at supporting sustainable development and integrated management of water, based on an improved knowledge base of water resources, both as regards quantity, quality and use, resulting in a strengthening of water management capabilities of participating countries.

Arctic-HYCOS

The Arctic-HYCOS project aims to improve the monitoring of freshwater fluxes into the Arctic Ocean for better climate predictions in the Northern Hemisphere. The project serves as a vital platform for the regular collection and free exchange of Arctic hydrological data among all participants. Main activities include evaluating, maintaining and potentially upgrading existing observational stations.

Network Analysis allow identifying observational stations suitable to evaluate freshwater flux to the Arctic Ocean and Seas and to study changes in Arctic hydrological regimes relative to climate change.

Partnerships

A multi-stakeholder approach could be traced back deeply in the roots of the WMO and its preceding international cooperation initiatives. It is seen in one of the first meeting invitations sent to the international meteorological community:

“We venture by the present circular to invite the heads of Meteorological Institutes, the Meteorological and other Learned Societies, as well as private scientific men and practical observers in the domain of Meteorology, to this consultative meeting, which is to be held in Leipzig …” (From the invitation letter to the Meteorological Conference at Leipzig, August 1872)

Eighteenth World Meteorological Congress Adopted Geneva Declaration – 2019: Building Community for Weather, Climate and Water Actions

The Eighteenth World Meteorological Congress (Cg-18) held from 03 to 14 June 2019 at the International Conference Centre of Geneva (CICG), adopted the Geneva Declaration – 2019: Building Community for Weather, Climate and Water Actions.

Report of High-Level Round Table on the launch of the Open Consultative Platform, 5–6 June 2019 Palexpo, Geneva

Prof. Petteri Taalas, WMO Secretary-General:

"The Open Consultative Platform – Partnership and Innovation for the Next Generation of Weather and Climate Intelligence – has been established. In order to achieve its ambition, we need to build trust and fostered joint actions to address the numerous challenges. Eighteenth World Meteorological Congress adopted the Geneva Declaration 2019: Building Community for Weather, Climate and Water Actions. The declaration outlines a clear policy direction for inclusive partnerships and the Open Consultative Platform will serve as a relevant mechanism for engagement in the WMO processes for all those who wish to contribute from all sectors."

Partnerships help meet challenge of change
